You've got the keys, moved in the furniture and started making the place your own. But step outside and something is missing. New builds rarely come with a house sign fitted. Developers focus on the structure, not the finishing details, and a house sign is usually left for the new owner to sort out. This guide covers everything you need to know: which signs work best on new build exteriors, how to install without damaging freshly rendered walls, and how to personalise your new home from the moment you move in.

Why New Builds Need a Different Approach
New build homes typically arrive with smooth rendered or brick exteriors, composite doors, aluminium windows and clean, contemporary detailing. That aesthetic demands a sign that matches it. A traditional slate plaque or a carved wooden sign would look completely out of place on a modern rendered frontage.
There's a practical consideration too. On new builds, particularly those with fresh render, drilling too early can damage the surface. Render needs time to fully cure, and a premature drill hole can cause cracking or crumbling around the fixing. This is where stick-on house signs come into their own, giving you a clean, permanent-looking result without touching the wall.
Fresh render typically needs 4 to 6 weeks to fully cure before drilling. Until then, a stick-on sign is the right choice.
Beyond the practical, new build owners are often thinking about personalisation for the first time. It's one of the first decisions you make about how your home looks from the outside. Getting it right sets the tone for everything else on the front elevation.
The Best House Signs for New Builds
Modern acrylic house signs are the natural fit for contemporary new build homes. Clean typography, minimal design and durable materials work with the smooth lines of a new build exterior rather than against them. Here are the signs from the Name & No. range that suit new builds best.
Modern House Sign
The most popular choice for new builds. Available in matt black or matt grey with a choice of silver or gold mirror backing. The layered construction creates a floating effect that looks purposeful against smooth render or buff brick. Available with both screw-on and stick-on fixing options, making it ideal for properties where the render is still curing.

Metallic House Sign
A compact square format, ideal for number-only signs on new builds where wall space near the front door is limited. The solid backing plate gives good contrast against both pale render and buff brick. Starting from £19, it's the most affordable option in the range without compromising on finish.

Which finish suits your new build?
Most new builds fall into one of a few exterior colour families. Here's how to match your sign finish to your frontage.
| Exterior type | Recommended finish | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| White or light grey render | Matt black + silver mirror | Strong contrast on pale surfaces, clean and modern |
| Dark grey or anthracite render | Matt grey + silver mirror | Tonal contrast without feeling too stark |
| Buff or pale brick | Matt black + gold mirror | Gold warmth complements the natural tones of pale brick |
| Mixed render and brick | Matt black + silver mirror | Neutral and versatile across both surface types |
A useful shortcut: match the mirror backing to the metalwork on your front door. If your handles and letterbox are brushed nickel or silver, choose silver mirror. If they're brass or gold, choose gold mirror.

Stick-On Signs: The Smart Choice for Fresh Render
If you've just moved into a new build with rendered walls, drilling is not always advisable right away. Fresh render is still curing and drilling into it too early can cause cracking or damage around the fixings. A stick-on house sign is the practical solution: same quality, same finish, no drilling required.
Our stick-on signs use industrial-grade weatherproof mounting tape that bonds firmly to smooth, clean surfaces. On render that has had time to settle, the bond is strong enough to be considered permanent. The signs look identical to the drilled versions from the front.
Stick-on signs work best on smooth, painted or sealed surfaces. Clean the wall thoroughly before applying and leave 24 hours for the adhesive to reach full strength.

Door Number Signs
Not every new build needs a large wall-mounted sign. If you have a composite door with a clean, flat surface, a door number sign is a neat and practical option. Smaller than a full house sign, door number signs stick directly to the door itself and give a clear, readable number without needing to find wall space.
Our door number signs start from £14 and use the same durable acrylic construction as the rest of the range. They're a popular choice for terraced new builds and apartments where the front door is the primary visible surface from the street.

Regional and Decorative Signs
A new build doesn't have to feel generic. If your home has a connection to a particular place or you want a sign that says something about who you are, a decorative or regional design can add real personality without compromising on the quality and finish of the rest of the range.
All of these signs use the same durable acrylic construction and mirrored backing as the standard range. The design is the only difference.

Something a Bit Different? Custom Requests Welcome
Not every new build address is straightforward. You might want a sign with a house name rather than a number, a specific size to fit a narrow wall space, or a combination of text and design that's not in the standard range. We handle custom requests regularly and make all of our signs in-house, so we can accommodate most ideas.

Installing a House Sign on a New Build
The key consideration on any new build is the surface condition. Here's what to know before you fix anything to the wall.
Rendered walls
If the render is fresh (less than 4 to 6 weeks old), use the stick-on method. Clean the surface, apply the tape and press firmly for 60 seconds. Leave 24 hours before the sign is exposed to rain. Once the render has fully cured, screw-on fixings can be used if you prefer a more permanent mount.
Brick-facing on new builds
Many new builds use pale buff brick or brick slips on the frontage. Treat this the same as standard brick: drill into the mortar rather than the brick face itself, use a masonry bit, and insert the rawl plugs included in your kit before screwing in the standoffs.
Composite doors
For door-mounted number signs, composite doors have a smooth, non-porous surface that the mounting tape bonds to very well. Clean with a dry cloth first and apply firm pressure for 60 seconds. Do not apply to textured or embossed door panels.
Common Questions
Do new builds come with a house sign fitted?
Rarely. Most UK house builders provide the house number on a temporary sticker or paper slip in the window during the build and marketing phase. Once you move in, fitting a permanent sign is down to you.
Can I drill into my new build's render straight away?
It's best to wait. Fresh render needs time to fully cure, typically 4 to 6 weeks depending on the mix and conditions. Drilling too early can cause cracking around the hole. Use a stick-on sign in the meantime and switch to a drilled fixing later if preferred.
What size sign do I need for a new build?
For a number-only sign on a standard new build frontage, the square 170mm format works well close to the front door. For a sign that includes a house name or street name, the rectangular 250x150mm format gives more space for the text to remain legible. If your home is set back from the road, go larger so the sign reads clearly from the pavement.
Will the sign rust or fade over time?
No. All Name & No. signs are made from UV-stable acrylic that resists fading, and the mirrored backing won't tarnish. They're designed for outdoor use in UK weather conditions and should last many years without any maintenance.
Do I need planning permission for a house sign on a new build?
In the vast majority of cases, no. A standard house sign or number does not require planning permission. If your development is within a conservation area or has specific conditions attached to its planning consent, it's worth checking with your local planning authority, but this is uncommon on standard new build developments.
